Inside our helmet painting process
CCP has received over the past year a number of emails from other custom painters. These were from members of the pubic and other painters asking what’s involved in painting a helmet? So during a Lee Johnston helmet I setup my Gopro and recorded some footage of its progress.
The Design
This helmet is probably one of the most recognized designs in the road racing scene at the minute. But don’t let its simplicity fool you. It was quite a task to replicate it on a helmet that wasn’t a RX7. This helmet was for a private customer and was going to be a show piece. All graphics and text were painted instead of vinyl used in the original. The vents and rubber trims were also removed to make sure that the finish was as good as factory. There’s nothing worse that a lid with trims that have a paint edge!
The Process
The film shows what steps we have to undertake to create this design. You can see just how labor intensive Custom helmet painting is. It starts with me laying out the design in fine line tape all the way through to clear coating and the finished built up helmet. Over the next couple of month’s I will be recording more footage of the projects in the shop and posting them on our Youtube channel.
